The short version

  • A 1 GB always-on app with managed Postgres is about €37/mo on Sliplane. On orkestr it is €15/mo with Postgres and Redis included.
  • Sliplane has a 48-hour demo server, no free tier. orkestr has a permanent free tier.
  • Sliplane has managed Postgres but no managed Redis, no built-in cron and no built-in PR previews.
  • Sliplane wins when you pack many containers onto one server, and on bigger machines.

Per-server vs per-seat

Sliplane bills for servers. You rent a box, from €9 a month for 1 vCPU and 1 GB up to large dedicated machines, and run as many containers on it as fit. Collaborators are unlimited, egress is included under fair use, and build minutes are not metered. If you have ten small services and a team of five, that model is very good value.

orkestr bills per seat. €15 a month covers your apps, two managed add-ons, crons and previews, with the servers out of sight. For a small team running a typical app with a database and a cache, that usually works out cheaper and needs less assembly.

What you assemble yourself on Sliplane

Sliplane offers managed Postgres with point-in-time recovery, starting at €19 a month. Redis runs as a container on your own server, and Sliplane's docs warn that volume backups may not be consistent for databases that are being written to. There is no built-in cron and no built-in preview environment per pull request; both are things you set up.

On orkestr, Postgres and Redis are both managed add-ons, crons are a setting, and every pull request gets a preview deploy automatically.

Being straight about one gap: orkestr does not have an always-on background worker service today. Queue consumers run inside your web process, or as scheduled and one-off jobs. If your app needs a separate long-running worker, factor that in.

What a small production app costs

One web app with ~1 GB of RAM, always on. A small managed Postgres, a small managed Redis, a few scheduled jobs, ~100 GB of egress a month, one developer.

orkestr

  • Pro seat (compute, crons, 1 TB bandwidth)€15
  • Web app, 0.5 vCPU / 1 GBincluded
  • Postgres add-on (512 MB RAM)included
  • Redis add-on (256 MB RAM)included
  • 100 GB egressincluded
Total / month€15

Sliplane

  • Base server, 2 vCPU / 2 GB (app + Redis + cron container)€17.80
  • Managed Postgres Starter (1 GB)€19.00
  • Redis as a container on the server€0
  • 100 GB egress€0
Total / month€36.80

Both in EUR excl. VAT, Sliplane on monthly billing in Germany (yearly billing is a third cheaper). A 1 GB app plus Redis does not fit on the 1 GB Starter server, so we used the 2 GB one. If you also run Postgres yourself as a container instead of the managed one, everything fits on a 4 GB Medium server for €28.80, with backups and upgrades on you.

When Sliplane is the better pick

We'd rather you pick the right tool than churn in a month. Stay on Sliplane if:

  • You run many small containers and want one flat server price for all of them.
  • Your team is large: Sliplane has unlimited collaborators, orkestr Pro is per seat.
  • You need bigger machines (up to 48 dedicated vCPUs), or regions in the US or Singapore.
  • You want to deploy arbitrary images from any registry, or need its confidential region for § 203 StGB workloads.

Common questions

Both are EU companies. What is the difference?
How you pay and how much you assemble. Sliplane rents you servers to fill with containers. orkestr is €15 per seat with managed Postgres, managed Redis, crons and PR previews included.
Can I move my Sliplane service to orkestr?
Yes. Connect the same GitHub repo; your Dockerfile is used as-is, or we detect the framework. Environment variables move over one to one.
Does orkestr run arbitrary Docker images?
orkestr builds from your repository. If you mainly deploy prebuilt images from a registry, Sliplane is a more natural fit.
How do I move my Postgres?
Dump it with pg_dump and restore it into your orkestr Postgres add-on with pg_restore. The connection string is injected into your app as an environment variable.
