Modal alternative

orkestr vs Modal

Modal is a powerful serverless platform with GPUs and sandboxes. orkestr is a sandbox product that keeps everything in the EU and bills what the sandbox actually uses.

Last updated

The short version

  • You can pin Modal sandboxes to an EU region for a 1.15x to 1.75x surcharge. Per Modal's docs, logs, snapshots and durable storage stay in the US, and create and terminate calls go through a US control plane.
  • Modal charges sandboxes about three times its standard compute rate. orkestr has one rate.
  • Our example agent workload is about $61/mo on Modal pinned to the EU, after its $30 monthly credit, and at most about €51/mo on orkestr.
  • Modal wins on GPUs, massive scale and the rest of its serverless platform.

EU compute is not EU data on Modal

Modal lets you pin a sandbox to an EU region, at a 1.15x surcharge for a broad region and 1.75x for a narrow one. Its own data-residency guide is clear about what that covers: application logs are stored in the United States, snapshots are stored in the United States regardless of where workloads run, durable storage for images and volumes is in the US, and sandbox create and terminate requests go through its control plane in us-east.

On orkestr there is nothing to pin. The sandbox, its files, its snapshots, its logs and the control plane all run in the EU, operated by an EU company.

A sandbox product vs a sandbox feature

Modal is a full serverless platform: functions, GPUs, autoscaling, queues, and sandboxes as one part of it. Sandboxes carry their own price list, about three times the rate of its regular functions, billed on whichever is higher of what you request and what you use.

orkestr sandboxes bill on what is actually used: real on-CPU time and working-set memory. When your agent waits on a model response, the sandbox costs close to nothing.

What an agent workload costs

An AI agent product running 2,000 sandbox sessions a month, each 2 vCPU / 4 GB for 10 minutes (about 333 sandbox-hours), plus 20 GB of persistent storage, one developer.

orkestr

  • Compute, 333 h x medium (2 vCPU / 4 GB), flat out≤ €50
  • 20 GB persistent storage (first 10 GB free)€1
  • Plan fee or seat€0
Total / monthat most €51

Modal

  • CPU, 333 h x 1 core (2 vCPU), EU 1.15x$54.40
  • Memory, 333 h x 4 GiB, EU 1.15x$36.82
  • Starter monthly credit-$30
  • 20 GB volumestored in the US
Total / month~$61.22

Modal in USD, orkestr in EUR, both excl. VAT. We applied Modal's broad-region multiplier to its sandbox rate; Modal does not say whether "base pricing" means the sandbox or the function rate. Without region pinning the same workload is about $49 after credit, and with a narrow EU region about $109. Modal volumes are stored in the US, so EU-resident storage needs your own bucket. orkestr's figure is a ceiling for sandboxes running flat out.

When Modal is the better pick

We'd rather you pick the right tool than churn in a month. Stay on Modal if:

  • You need GPUs in your sandboxes, or you already run GPU functions on Modal.
  • You need massive scale: Modal says it supports up to fifty thousand concurrent sandboxes per customer.
  • Your sandboxes are one piece of a larger Modal app with functions, queues and scheduled jobs.
  • US data storage is acceptable for your users.

Common questions

If I pin Modal to the EU, is my data in the EU?
Not all of it, according to Modal's data-residency guide: logs, snapshots and durable storage live in the US, and lifecycle calls route through us-east. The compute itself runs in the EU region you pick.
Is orkestr isolation stronger than gVisor?
Different. gVisor intercepts system calls in user space; orkestr gives every sandbox its own virtual machine and kernel. Modal also offers a VM runtime. Both are reasonable choices, and many security reviews prefer a hardware-virtualised boundary.
Does orkestr have GPUs?
No. For GPU workloads Modal is the better fit.
Do you have a Python SDK like Modal?
Yes, Python and JS SDKs, plus a REST API, a CLI and an MCP server. Sandboxes are created from templates you build from a recipe, similar to Modal images.
