Scalingo alternative

orkestr vs Scalingo

Scalingo is a mature French PaaS with health-data certification. orkestr is a flatter, cheaper bill for teams that do not need those certifications.

The short version

  • A 1 GB always-on app with Postgres and Redis is about €43/mo on Scalingo with starter databases, €63 with production-class ones. On orkestr it is €15/mo.
  • Scalingo has a 30-day trial, then you pay. orkestr has a permanent free tier.
  • Scalingo builds with buildpacks; Dockerfile deploys are not in its docs. orkestr takes a Dockerfile or detects your framework.
  • Scalingo wins on certifications: ISO 27001, HDS for health data, and a SecNumCloud-qualified infrastructure region.

Where Scalingo is genuinely strong

Scalingo has been running since 2015 and it shows. It is ISO 27001 certified, certified to host health data (HDS) in France, listed on the French public-sector purchasing market, and offers a region on SecNumCloud-qualified infrastructure. If a procurement checklist asks for any of those, orkestr cannot tick the box today.

It also has no egress fees, no per-seat pricing, and a Heroku-compatible model (Procfile, buildpacks) that makes moving off Heroku straightforward.

Where the bill differs

Scalingo prices every container and every database separately. A 1 GB container is €28.80 a month, and a starter Postgres and Redis add €7.20 each. Move to the multi-node business classes it recommends for critical production and the databases alone are €34.40. On orkestr Pro, one €15 seat covers the container, a Postgres, a Redis, crons and PR previews.

Builds are the other difference. Scalingo detects your stack with buildpacks; we could not find a way to deploy your own Dockerfile in its documentation. orkestr uses your Dockerfile as-is, or detects the framework when there is none.

Being straight about one gap: orkestr does not have an always-on background worker service today. Queue consumers run inside your web process, or as scheduled and one-off jobs. If your app needs a separate long-running worker, factor that in.

What a small production app costs

One web app with ~1 GB of RAM, always on. A small managed Postgres, a small managed Redis, a few scheduled jobs, ~100 GB of egress a month, one developer.

  • Caching (Redis) starter 256M€7.20
  • Scheduler one-off containers (~450 min)~€0.15
  • 100 GB egress€0
Total / month~€43.35

Both in EUR excl. VAT, Scalingo on its published 30-day basis. Starter databases are single-node with a 98% SLA; with the business classes (multi-node, 99.96% SLA) the Scalingo total is about €63.35. The scheduler line is our estimate: three 5-minute daily jobs on the default M size. One container carries a 98% runtime SLA on Scalingo; two or more get 99.9%.

When Scalingo is the better pick

We'd rather you pick the right tool than churn in a month. Stay on Scalingo if:

  • You host health data in France and need HDS, or a buyer requires ISO 27001 or SecNumCloud-qualified infrastructure.
  • You sell to the French public sector through UGAP.
  • You want a contractual SLA with service credits and paid support tiers with guaranteed response times.
  • You need containers bigger than 1 GB of RAM, or many collaborators without per-seat pricing.

Common questions

Both are EU companies. Why switch?
Mostly the bill and the build. orkestr Pro is €15 per seat with a container, Postgres, Redis, crons and previews included, and it deploys your Dockerfile directly. If you need Scalingo's certifications, stay.
Does my Procfile app work on orkestr?
Usually yes. We detect Node, Python, Ruby, Go, Java, PHP and more, and your web process becomes the start command. Separate worker processes are the exception: orkestr has no always-on worker service yet, so they run in-process or as jobs.
Is orkestr HDS or ISO 27001 certified?
No, not today. If you need either, Scalingo is the better choice.
How do I move my Scalingo Postgres?
Dump it with pg_dump and restore it into your orkestr Postgres add-on with pg_restore. The connection string is injected into your app as an environment variable.
