Render alternative

orkestr vs Render

Render and orkestr look alike: connect a repo, get containers, Postgres and previews. The differences are how you pay and whose jurisdiction your data sits under.

Last updated

The short version

  • Render bills a workspace fee plus every instance, database and GB of bandwidth. orkestr Pro is €15/seat with compute, two add-ons and 1 TB of egress included.
  • Render has no 1 GB instance: after 512 MB ($7) the next step is 2 GB ($25).
  • Render free Postgres expires after 30 days. orkestr free Postgres does not expire, it pauses when idle.
  • Render offers a Frankfurt region. orkestr is EU-only and an EU company.

Same shape, different bill

Render is a good platform and the closest thing to orkestr on this list. Both build your repo into containers, attach managed Postgres and Redis, and give you preview environments. If you are happy there, the case for switching is about two things: the bill and the jurisdiction.

On the bill: Render charges per instance, per database, per GB over a small bandwidth allowance and per extra build minute. Egress is where it creeps up: the Hobby workspace includes 5 GB, then it is $0.15/GB. orkestr Pro includes 1 TB in the €15 seat.

Jurisdiction, not just region

Render's Frankfurt region keeps your servers in Germany, which covers a lot of requirements. What it does not change is that Render is a US company. orkestr is an EU company, and every sub-processor we use (compute, CDN, payments, email) is EU-based too. If a customer's DPA review asks about the provider, not the data center, that is the difference.

Being straight about one gap: orkestr does not have an always-on background worker service today. Queue consumers run inside your web process, or as scheduled and one-off jobs. If your app needs a separate long-running worker, factor that in.

What a small production app costs

One web app with ~1 GB of RAM, always on. A small managed Postgres, a small managed Redis, a few scheduled jobs, ~100 GB of egress a month, one developer.

orkestr

  • Pro seat (compute, crons, 1 TB bandwidth)€15
  • Web app, 0.5 vCPU / 1 GBincluded
  • Postgres add-on (512 MB RAM)included
  • Redis add-on (256 MB RAM)included
  • 100 GB egressincluded
Total / month€15

Render

  • Web service, 2 GB / 1 CPU (no 1 GB size)$25
  • Postgres, 1 GB RAM$19
  • Key Value, 256 MB$10
  • 95 GB egress over the 5 GB included$14.25
  • Hobby workspace$0
Total / month$68.25

Render in USD, orkestr in EUR, both excl. VAT. To be fair to Render, its $25 instance has more RAM than ours (2 GB vs 1 GB). Drop to the 512 MB instance and the total is $50.25. On the Pro workspace ($25/mo, 25 GB egress included) the 2 GB stack is $90.25.

When Render is the better pick

We'd rather you pick the right tool than churn in a month. Stay on Render if:

  • You need more than 1 GB of RAM per service on a self-serve plan.
  • You run always-on background workers as separate services today.
  • You need US or Asia regions next to your users.
  • You use Render Workflows or Blueprints heavily and do not want to re-express them.

Common questions

Is orkestr a drop-in replacement for Render?
For web services, mostly yes: same repo, Dockerfile or auto-detected build, environment variables, managed Postgres and Redis, custom domains and preview environments. Not covered: separate always-on worker services and instances over 1 GB on Pro.
Does the free Postgres expire?
No. The Starter add-on stays as long as your account does. It pauses when idle instead of being deleted. Render deletes free Postgres databases after 30 days.
How do I move my Render Postgres?
pg_dump from Render using its external connection string, then pg_restore into your orkestr Postgres add-on. Point your app at the injected DATABASE_URL, test on the orkestr URL, then switch DNS.
Render has a Frankfurt region. Is orkestr more GDPR-friendly?
Both can keep data in the EU. The difference is the provider: orkestr is an EU company with EU sub-processors only, and the GDPR DPA is self-serve on every plan, free tier included.
