Clever Cloud alternative

orkestr vs Clever Cloud

Clever Cloud is one of the oldest European PaaS providers, with low add-on prices and health-data certification. orkestr is a single flat seat with previews and a free tier.

Last updated

The short version

  • A 1 GB always-on app with Postgres and Redis is about €26 per 30 days on Clever Cloud. On orkestr it is €15/mo.
  • Clever Cloud has no free app tier, only signup credits. orkestr has a permanent free tier.
  • Clever Cloud crons do not run in its Docker environment, and PR review apps need a GitHub Action. On orkestr both are built in.
  • Clever Cloud wins on maturity, ISO 27001 and HDS certification, and a very wide range of managed services.

A mature platform with cheap small add-ons

Clever Cloud has been running since 2010. It is ISO 27001 certified, HDS certified for health data in its French regions, and offers a long list of managed services beyond Postgres and Redis: MySQL, MongoDB, Elastic, Kafka, S3-compatible storage and more. Its smallest dedicated Postgres and Redis plans are a few euros a month.

So this is not a page about Clever Cloud being expensive. For a single app with tiny databases it is close to orkestr, and with its broader catalogue it may suit you better.

Where orkestr is simpler

Clever Cloud bills every instance and add-on per second against credits you top up each month. orkestr Pro is one flat seat. The difference shows when you add environments: on orkestr every pull request gets a preview deploy automatically, and each project gets three environments, all inside the seat.

Docker is the other gap. Many teams deploy a Dockerfile, and Clever Cloud runs crons only on its native runtimes, not in its Docker environment. On orkestr, crons work the same whether you bring a Dockerfile or not.

Being straight about one gap: orkestr does not have an always-on background worker service today. Queue consumers run inside your web process, or as scheduled and one-off jobs. If your app needs a separate long-running worker, factor that in.

What a small production app costs

One web app with ~1 GB of RAM, always on. A small managed Postgres, a small managed Redis, a few scheduled jobs, ~100 GB of egress a month, one developer.

orkestr

  • Pro seat (compute, crons, 1 TB bandwidth)€15
  • Web app, 0.5 vCPU / 1 GBincluded
  • Postgres add-on (512 MB RAM)included
  • Redis add-on (256 MB RAM)included
  • 100 GB egressincluded
Total / month€15

Clever Cloud

  • XS instance (1 vCPU / 1 GiB)€16.00
  • Postgres XXS Tiny Space€4.90
  • Redis S (128 MiB)€5.00
  • Crons via cron.json (native runtime)€0
  • 100 GB egress€0
Total / month~€25.90

Both in EUR excl. VAT, Clever Cloud per 30 days in its Paris zone. The smallest Postgres has 512 MiB of RAM and 512 MiB of disk; with a 1 GB-RAM Postgres (XS Tiny Space, €15) the total is €36. If you deploy with Docker, cron.json is not available and scheduled jobs need a separate setup. Egress at €0 is based on Clever Cloud saying it charges no exit fees except for object storage.

When Clever Cloud is the better pick

We'd rather you pick the right tool than churn in a month. Stay on Clever Cloud if:

  • You need HDS health-data hosting or ISO 27001 from your provider.
  • You use managed services we do not offer, like MySQL, MongoDB, Elastic or Kafka.
  • You need autoscaling across many instances, instances bigger than 1 GB, or regions outside the EU.
  • Your team is large: Clever Cloud does not price per seat, orkestr Pro does.

Common questions

Clever Cloud is cheap. Why would I switch?
For one small app, the bills are close. orkestr is simpler as you grow environments: previews on every PR and three environments per project are included in the €15 seat, and crons work with Dockerfiles. If the certifications or the wider service catalogue matter to you, stay.
Does my Clever Cloud app run on orkestr unchanged?
Usually. Node, Python, Java, Go, Ruby, PHP and static apps are detected automatically, and a Dockerfile is used as-is. Environment variables move over one to one.
Is orkestr HDS certified?
No. If you host health data in France, Clever Cloud is the better choice.
How do I move my database?
Dump it with pg_dump and restore it into your orkestr Postgres add-on. For Redis, most apps treat it as a cache and simply start empty.
