Daytona alternative

orkestr vs Daytona

Daytona is a fast, feature-rich sandbox platform with an EU region. orkestr gives every sandbox its own VM, bills actual usage, and is an EU company end to end.

Last updated

The short version

  • Daytona sandboxes are Linux containers by default, with VMs as an option. Every orkestr sandbox is its own VM with its own kernel.
  • Both offer an EU region. Daytona is a US company, and its billing, identity, analytics and support sub-processors are in the US. orkestr uses EU sub-processors only.
  • On Daytona, full internet access needs Tier 3 (a $500 prepaid top-up); below that, network access is restricted. On orkestr, open internet is one argument away on every tier, free included.
  • Daytona wins on GPUs, Windows and desktop sandboxes, a bigger free credit ($200) and higher limits.

Container by default vs a VM every time

Daytona's docs say its sandboxes run as Linux containers by default, with dedicated VMs available. For a lot of workloads that is fine, and containers start fast. For running code an AI wrote, or code your customers uploaded, many security reviews want a kernel boundary.

On orkestr there is no tier to pick: every sandbox, free or paid, is its own virtual machine with its own kernel. The blast radius of anything inside is that one VM.

An EU region is not an EU company

Daytona has a shared EU region, which keeps compute in Europe. The company is Daytona Platforms Inc. in New York, and its published sub-processor list puts billing, identity, analytics, email and support tools in the US.

orkestr is an EU company and every sub-processor we use is in the EU. That is usually the question a GDPR or procurement review actually asks.

One more practical difference: on Daytona the first two tiers have restricted network access, and full internet access starts at Tier 3, a $500 prepaid top-up. orkestr sandboxes start with no network, and open internet or a domain allowlist is one argument away on every tier, the free one included.

What an agent workload costs

An AI agent product running 2,000 sandbox sessions a month, each 2 vCPU / 4 GB for 10 minutes (about 333 sandbox-hours), plus 20 GB of persistent storage, one developer.

orkestr

  • Compute, 333 h x medium (2 vCPU / 4 GB), flat out≤ €50
  • 20 GB persistent storage (first 10 GB free)€1
  • Plan fee or seat€0
Total / monthat most €51

Daytona

  • vCPU, 333 h x 2$33.60
  • Memory, 333 h x 4 GiB$21.60
  • Disk while running (8 GiB)$0.29
  • 20 GB volumeincluded
Total / month~$55.50

Daytona in USD, orkestr in EUR, both excl. VAT. Daytona bills allocated resources, and a sandbox keeps billing until it is stopped (auto-stop defaults to 15 minutes of inactivity), so sessions not stopped explicitly cost more. orkestr's figure is a ceiling for sandboxes running flat out; idle time costs close to nothing. Daytona's $200 free credit covers several months of this workload.

When Daytona is the better pick

We'd rather you pick the right tool than churn in a month. Stay on Daytona if:

  • You need GPUs, Windows sandboxes or desktop computer use.
  • You need more than 32 GB of sandboxes running at once on a self-serve plan.
  • You want built-in LSP and git APIs, or SDKs in Ruby, Go or Java.
  • Container isolation is enough for your workload and you want the fastest possible start times.

Common questions

Is Daytona not hosted in the EU too?
Its compute can be: Daytona has a shared EU region. The company is US-based and several sub-processors are US, as listed in its DPA. orkestr is an EU company with EU sub-processors only.
Can my agent reach the internet on the free tier?
Yes. Sandboxes start with no network for maximum isolation; pass network="open" for full internet, or "restricted" with an allowlist of domains. All three work on every tier.
Does orkestr have GPUs?
No. If your sandboxes need GPUs, Daytona is the better fit.
How do I port my code?
The concepts map one to one: create, exec, files, snapshot or pause, terminate. Use our Python or JS SDK, the REST API, or our MCP server if your agent speaks MCP.
