Coolify alternative

orkestr vs Coolify

Coolify is an excellent open-source PaaS you run on your own servers. orkestr is the managed version of that idea: same git push workflow, nobody on your team patching servers.

Last updated

The short version

  • Coolify is free to self-host, or $5/mo for Coolify Cloud. Either way you also rent and run the servers. orkestr Pro is €15/mo with the servers included and managed.
  • On Coolify you own OS updates, firewalls, backups, restore tests and monitoring. Coolify's own docs say so. On orkestr we do.
  • Coolify has a huge one-click catalogue (280+ services) and runs on any server you like.
  • If you have the time and want full control, Coolify is hard to beat on price.

Coolify is great. It is also a job.

Coolify is one of the best open-source projects in this space: a polished dashboard, previews, scheduled tasks, S3 backups and 280+ one-click services, on any server you control. Self-hosted it costs nothing, and it is not a trap: if you stop using it, your containers keep running.

What it does not do is run your servers. Coolify's own documentation lists what stays with you in both its self-hosted and Cloud models: operating system updates, SSH access, firewall rules, DNS, database backups and restore testing, secrets, monitoring and incident response. Its databases are single containers; replication and failover are up to you.

What orkestr takes off your plate

orkestr is the same git push experience with the operations included. We run, patch and monitor the servers, isolate your containers, manage Postgres and Redis, and handle TLS and routing. You pay €15 a month and nobody on your team gets paged because a disk filled up at 3am.

The trade-off is control: on orkestr you cannot SSH into the host, pick your own server or run any of 280 one-click services. If that matters more than your time, Coolify is the right tool.

Being straight about one gap: orkestr does not have an always-on background worker service today. Queue consumers run inside your web process, or as scheduled and one-off jobs. If your app needs a separate long-running worker, factor that in.

What a small production app costs

One web app with ~1 GB of RAM, always on. A small managed Postgres, a small managed Redis, a few scheduled jobs, ~100 GB of egress a month, one developer.

orkestr

  • Pro seat (compute, crons, 1 TB bandwidth)€15
  • Web app, 0.5 vCPU / 1 GBincluded
  • Postgres add-on (512 MB RAM)included
  • Redis add-on (256 MB RAM)included
  • 100 GB egressincluded
Total / month€15

Coolify

  • Coolify Cloud control panel (or $0 self-hosted)$5
  • A 2 vCPU / 4 GB VPS from an EU provider~€4-17
  • Postgres + Redis as containers on that VPS€0
  • S3 storage for Postgres backupsa few €
  • Your time: patching, backups, monitoringyours
Total / month~€10-25 + your time

Coolify Cloud in USD, servers and orkestr in EUR, excl. VAT. The server range is what common EU providers charge for 2 vCPU / 4 GB. Self-hosting Coolify on the same box needs at least 2 GB of that RAM for Coolify itself, and Coolify recommends a separate server for it. Time is the real cost and is not in the number.

When Coolify is the better pick

We'd rather you pick the right tool than churn in a month. Stay on Coolify if:

  • You enjoy running servers, or already have someone whose job that is.
  • You want full control: root access, your own hardware, any provider, any region.
  • You run many apps and services and want one server price instead of per-seat pricing.
  • You rely on its one-click catalogue or Docker Compose deployments.

Common questions

Coolify is free. Why pay for orkestr?
Coolify the software is free; the servers and the hours are not. You still rent servers and keep them patched, backed up and monitored. orkestr includes the servers and that work in the seat price.
Can I move a Coolify app to orkestr?
Yes. Connect the same repo. Dockerfiles are used as-is, and Nixpacks-style projects (Node, Python, Go, Ruby, Java and more) are auto-detected. Docker Compose stacks need to be split into an app plus managed add-ons.
Is Coolify Cloud a managed hosting service?
Not for your apps. Coolify Cloud hosts the control panel; your apps and databases run on servers you bring and maintain.
Can I get root on orkestr?
No. orkestr is a managed platform, so the hosts are ours. If you need root on the machine, Coolify on your own server is the right fit.
